Officer Dronak was alerted late at night by Sgt. Mont of the Vice squad of an imminent drug bust. Dronak and others from SWAT suit up and prepare to approach an apartment complex and to arrest a would be drug lord. They arrive without incident and swiftly breach the housing unit. Dronak finds the suspect and apprehends him. As Mont, and the other officers search the place they find no indication of crime.
The suspect identifies himself with his online persona "DarkMane" and believes this was a prank by an internet troll. Dronak and other officers do not remain, and apologize to “DM” for the disturbance.
The Next day, Officer Eck from Internal affairs overhears Mont and Chellick discussing the bogus SWAT call. Eck wonders why a raid would have been given to a suspect with no priors. A brief investigation finds C-Sec records have been hacked to update "DM" as a dangerous person with many prior crimes.
Chellick places Eck in charge on the investigation to discover who breached C-Sec's internal security.
Eck recruits Officer Clark of cyber-crimes to assist with this second joint case. They also interview Dronak about what he uncovered during the SWAT raid. Dronak admits that no evidence was uncovered, but "DarkMane" fingered his online competitor "Wings of Liberty" as a jealous rival. "WoL" becomes the top suspect in the C-Sec hacking.
Details on "Wings of Liberty" are easy to find as he is a public figure. A high ranking player on the popular eSport Diamond Crystal Live. "WoL" and "DM" both vie for the top spots as crowd favorites in this competitive game. "DM's" accusation is the WoL" would have interrupted his play to impede his game performance.
Dronak and officer "Double A" Aaland, hold stakeout surveillance begins on "WoL" but nothing is found. He never leaves his home, and has near constant broadcasting of his game play several hours a day. Still all the officers monitor “WoL.” Dronak & “Double A” in person and Eck & Clark electronically.
Fed up with waiting Dronak approaches "WoL's" door without a warrant. Amazingly, he goads "WoL" into inviting him into his home by challenging "WoL." When "WoL" discovers that Dronak is serious about confronting him he attempts to flee. Dronak gives chase. After Catching "WoL," Dronk finds an unregistered firearm, illegal performance enhancing drugs, and falsified IDs.
"WoL" is arrested, but not yet charged with a crime. While the investigators weigh the evidence, "Double A" interrogates "WoL" discussing a plea bargain. While "WoL" he initially receptive, he becomes paranoid about C-Sec accessing his personal computer. Despite the best efforts of Clark, "WoL" PC remains mostly encrypted. With indications that “WoL” has illegal revenue, but no clue as to where it comes from. Drug sales are ruled out as a possibility.
"WoL" is charged with a few illegal possessions.
Returning to "DarkMane" the officers hope to get more details on his rival. Through careful questions they learn that "DM" knew "WoL" personally, and his address. Continuing this, they trap "DM" into revealing the existence of an illegal live-action competition of Diamond Crystal Live. Competitors of the video game have been meeting in person to recreate the fantasy in real life. "DarkMane" knows about this underground fighting ring, known as "FPS BootCamp" has attracted gambling and steroid like drugs.
C-Sec Vice and SWAT prepare another raid, hoping the infiltrate and surround the next "FPS BootCamp" competition. Officer Eck even goes undercover as "DarkMane's" costumed persona. As "DarkMane" was going to be in the next challenge.
The “FPS BootCamp” turns out to be quite the spectacle, drawing huge crowds. C-Sec allows the competition to begin, hoping to observe illegal activity before making arrests. Officer Eck (in costume) faces off against "MagiKarp," the new top contender after "WoL's" and "DM's" decline. "MagiKarp" isn't much of an opponent in the physical world, although his antics please the crowd. Eck easily subdues him, and as the many hidden C-Sec officers spring their trap, Eck arrests "MagiKarp."
72 individuals were arrested for various drug and gambling crimes, and the illegal fights were stopped. "MagiKarp's" Omnitool also ties him to the bogus SWAT call on "DarkMane," and to falsifying C-Secs records. Apparently never thinking he would be caught, he never tried to hide. His motive was to gamble against himself and win big as the underdog winner.
"MagiKarp", was arrested and is expected to serve 20 years. "Wings of Liberty" was sentenced to 5 years. "DarkMane," while cooperative, did confess to his share of crimes, and will serve 6 months in prison, less with good behavior.
