#20 - GenCon 2019
Got back to Minnesota late on Sunday. 11pm marked the last hour of my first GenCon experience. Certainly there is a lot to say because there was just so much to see. I don't think that I took a close look at 10% of what the Con had to offer. I could never have played more than 1% of all that was offered over that long weekend. I saw dozens of excellent costumes, hundreds of new games just released, and thousands of participants playing their favorites. Games I've never even heard of.
Which is, my takeaway from the first big convention I've attended. I met a lot of people eager to try something new. A lot of people with new treasures under their arms. the same people told me they have copies left at home, on the shelf waiting for a chance to play. With the sheer multitude of options, the variety of flavors to satisfy ever niche, I wanted to write about remembering to play.
I'm almost heartbroken to hear my fellow play admit to me they own a game they've not yet tried. I don't think anyone would be happy to hear you've got a games shelf collecting dust. I myself must confess that behind me now are a few titles still wrapped in plastic.
I really should find a good time to pull those out...
Maybe we could talk forever about why we like our favorite games. Surely we could daydream to eternity, wishing something we could do, or inventing new content to share with the world. But, we've got to know our limits. A game that could be, doesn't look much like one that is or was.
Today, I am advocating for the games that are done. A reminder that a game is an activity, sure we hold the box in our hands, but we play it together. Games are meant to be played, something that we do.
I won't pretend that scheduling is easy, or that you can always find someone with the same interests as you.
I can promise you however that you'll enjoy a game a lot more once you've gotten started. That effort put into making a day plan for your newest Deck-Builder or Eurogame will pay off.
I've found good success organizing games just before dinner time. If were lucky everyone will have time to play "Marrying Mr. Darcy" after dessert. Have always been happy with those evenings.
That's about all I can add to this one today. I don't know what games you own, and I don't know the friends you will play them with.
I do hope if you went to GenCon that you enjoyed yourself. I hope you found the right group of people and that you got to take part in the games you wanted.
As for me, I've some lessons learned. For 2020 I'll want to try and refocus, I can't do everything, so I'll maximize my attention on the games hours I will have.
Maybe I'll see you there...
